Bedfordshire Professor Ashraf Jawaid has been awarded an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours - for contributions to education.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (External Relations) of the University of Bedfordshire has been key in boosting the number of overseas students who have enrolled for a range of qualifications including MBAs, PhDs, Business studies and computing in recent years.

Professor Jawaid said: “I am delighted but equally humbled to have been chosen for such a high honour.

“Education provides opportunities and opens up all manner of avenues whatever your country of origin. That is a message I have been taking overseas which has resulted in students from Asia, Africa and the Middle East coming to the University of Bedfordshire to study.

“I’d like to think that we at the University are helping not only to educate people from across the globe but also foster understanding and tolerance.

“Clearly there is also a team of people without whose help I could not have achieved what I have to have received this honour. So I’d like to say a big thank you to all in my team for their hard work and dedication.”

University Vice Chancellor, Professor Les Ebdon CBE DL said: "I am delighted that the immense contribution which Professor Jawaid has made to international education has been recognised by Her Majesty.

"Ashraf came here as an international student himself after completing his first degree in Pakistan. Following a distinguished academic career in manufacturing engineering, he turned his considerable strengths and energy to enabling others to enjoy the life-transforming experience from which he benefited so much.

"International students bring in some £8bn per year in foreign exchange earnings to this country. But their biggest impact is when they return home as leaders in their nations, full of good will towards this country.

"The University of Bedfordshire has benefited enormously from our international students, which allows all Bedfordshire students to gain a superior student experience - they know that the world today is a global village."

Professor Jawaid, 60, is also international associate of the Leadership Foundation for Higher Education.

His awards include Kelly’s Award for Education and for leading the Best International Recruitment Team of the Year.

He has a PhD in Manufacturing Engineering from the University of Warwick, MSc in Production and Engineering Management from the University of Birmingham and BSc in Mechanical (production) engineering from the University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore, Pakistan.
